Courses
Students, if you are watching this then your teacher must have approved you to view a Cyber High course. This tutorial is designed to introduce you to the basics of Cyber High and how to use our online courses. There are many other tutorials available to guide you in using the many specific features of Cyber High, so this video will just provide a general overview of how to begin using the program.
Once your teacher has approved you to take a course, login to Cyber High and click on the Courses menu tab. Each course contains 5 units displayed in consecutive order. Each Unit contains a landing page that acts as the central source for information as you work through a Unit. Here you can find unit progress information, Unit links for viewing items like content standards and objectives, the Glossary, the Bibliography, the Writing Process, and more.
On this page, you will also find links to access the course content. As you navigate through a Cyber High course, the system is keeping track of the pages you’ve viewed and the activities and quizzes that you have taken. The percentage of the unit you have completed is displayed in the progress bar, as well as in the Table of Contents section on the side of the landing page. The table of contents displays checkmarks next to each page as it is viewed, or any activity that you complete with a passing grade. Clicking on the arrow to the left of the Chapter name expands the chapter to display its contents. The chapter is marked complete when all pages have been viewed, all activities have been completed, or, for chapters that contain a quiz, when the quiz has been taken and passed. When you complete all of the pages in a chapter, you will automatically be taken back to the landing page where you can select the next chapter, view your progress, or view the Unit Links. You can return to the landing page at any time by clicking on the Home button. Based on your school’s preferences, navigation through the units may be restricted. For example, your school administrator may require that all activities are completed with a passing grade before you can continue to the next chapter. Please contact your teacher to find out your schools preferences regarding unit navigation.
To begin working on the unit, click on the first link displayed on the landing page titled “Unit Introduction.” Use the Next and Back buttons at the bottom of the page on the desktop version or the arrows that appear on each side of the page for the tablet to navigate between pages . As you work through the Unit, you will be presented with content pages, videos, interactive elements, activities, quizzes, and, in some cases, practice pages.
Content pages provide background information about the topics, reading selections, and explanations of the material. Instructional videos are available in many of the courses. The courses also contain additional video and audio files that you will need to watch or listen to, as they may contain important information found on the unit exam.
Activities allow you the opportunity to apply what you have learned and to demonstrate your understanding of the material. You should use these activities to determine your own readiness to take the chapter quizzes. There are two types of activities: self-grading activities and writing activities. Self-grading activities will grade your answers when the “check answers” button is clicked and show you your results immediately. In addition, a review link is provided for any question that was answered incorrectly. Clicking on the link will display links to specific content within the course that is related to the relevant subject matter. Please note that this feature is not available in all courses. Essay activities are writing assignments that are available for your teacher to view and to grade. Essays are graded based on the rubrics that are provided to you and your teacher. You should review and score your own writing assignment against the rubric before submitting it for grading. When your teacher has graded the essay it will appear on your progress page and on the essay page. Essays will be graded either as “meets standards” or “does not meet standards”. In addition, the last essay of each unit can be used to earn up to 4 percentage points toward the final unit grade. To earn these points you must submit the essay, and your teacher must grade the essay as meeting the standards before your teacher approves you to take the unit exam. If your teacher grades the essay after approving the exam you will not receive the additional points for completing the essay. There is no exception to this policy so please assure that your essay is graded before starting the final unit exam.
All students who receive a passing grade on this essay will be awarded 4 percentage points, however, students cannot earn a grade higher than 100% for the final unit score. For example, if your final essay was graded as meeting the standards by your teacher, and you receive a 98% on the final unit exam, only 2% of the 4 percentage points will be awarded toward the final grade since this will bring your grade to 100%. Also, if you are able to pass the unit with the 4 percentage points, you will not be able to retake a failed unit exam. For example, if you receive a 56% on the final unit exam and are awarded the 4 percentage points for the essay, you will have successfully completed the unit with the minimum passing score of 60% and will not be able to retake the exam to receive a higher unit grade. A detailed video tutorial displays on every essay page, and additional information is available by viewing the help files. Contact your teacher through the chat icon located in the toolbar or in person.
Performance Based Learning Projects – Many courses contain Performance Based Learning projects that provide you with an opportunity to extend your learning. Some units may have more than one performance based learning project. Most projects allow you to select the topic that is most interesting to you and the medium you wish to use to complete it. If you love to write you may choose the Story tool to write a story or a journal, if you enjoy creating videos, you may select that option, or if you like graphic design you may select the website option. The options that are available to you depend on the preferences set by your school and by the nature of the project. Video tutorials are available in the top right corner of the project pages to help you to learn how to use the tools that are available.
Projects are collaborative meaning that you can view projects that other students have created and they can view and comment on the projects that you create. These projects can also be graded by your teacher. Projects become public and are available to your teacher for grading when they’ve been submitted for grading. When your teacher has graded the project it will appear on your progress page. Projects will be graded either as satisfactory or unsatisfactory. To maintain your privacy your real name, the school you attend or any other identifying information will never be displayed to a student, only to the teacher. Instead, other students will see your tag name and avatar if you’ve created one. If you haven’t created one you will be listed as anonymous. Using inappropriate language, bullying, or using derogatory remarks about the projects, comments or opinions of other students may result in immediate expulsion from the Cyber High program. If you are expelled you will not be able to complete your current course or enroll in additional courses in the PASS Cyber High program.
Each unit contains quizzes that appear at the end of most chapters and a final quiz that appears at the end of each unit. These quizzes are preparation for the unit exam and a way for your teacher to determine if you are ready to take it. The number of times you are able to take a quiz is determined by your school. As when taking an activity, when you’ve completed the quiz, you will be provided with a list of concepts or subject matter areas that you should study before continuing to the next chapter. Use the links provided to review the material. Please note that this feature is not available for all courses. After completing a quiz you will Contact your teacher to find out the quiz policy at your school.
Finally, when you’ve completed a unit, you have passed the unit activities and quizzes, and you feel comfortable with your knowledge of the content, you may request to take the unit exam from the course landing page. Your teacher must approve you to take the exam. Based on your school preferences you may be required to pass the unit quizzes before a teacher can approve you to take the final exam. Unit exams can be taken a maximum of two times, you must login and complete the exam in a set amount of time, and you will know your results immediately. Passed exams cannot be retaken, so be sure that you are prepared for the exam before you begin. Once you start an exam, you will not be able to view the course contents or the course notes.
When all five Units of a course are completed, an average grade is generated for the course and a transcript is mailed to the Registrar of your high school. The credit earned is then posted to your permanent record.
